The capital Kralendijk, coming from Koralendijk or Coral Dike, is a sleepy town known for its relaxed pace, open air bars, water front restaurants and delightfully pastel colored houses. Popular beaches near Kralendijk, often shortened to Playa or Beach, are Donkey Beach and Bachelors Beach (near the Windsock Building) and Public Beach found south of the airport. The small island Klein Bonaire and its stunning coral reef is the main attraction for some of the best diving and snorkeling in Bonaire.
One of the main highlights in town is Fort Oranje, built in 1639 to protect Bonaire's harbor, but this fort has also served as government center, prison, warehouse, police station and courthouse of Bonaire. Other attractions are the historic remains from WWII, several monuments, Wilhelmina park, the St Bernardus Church and Kaya Grandi, the place for some basic shopping. Just south of the airport you will find Donkey Sanctuary Bonaire, a shelter for sick and homeless donkeys.
