The ecological preserve Washington-Slagbaai National Park comprises most of the northwest of Bonaire. It is named after the two large plantations Washington and Slagbaai, mainly used for cattle, goats, charcoal and salt. This 13.500 acres large park offers two different 4wheel drive tracks that bring you to steep cliffs, fields of cacti and romantic secluded beaches such as Boca Cocolishi. You can hike up the 240 meter high hill Subi Brandaris, Bonaire's highest point, with views across the surrounding bays and even Curacao. Highlights inside the park are the Old Malmok Lighthouse, the flamingos especially at the Saliñas near Goto Meer and 500-year-old Arawak Indian inscriptions found in the caves Ceru Pungi, Spelonk and Ceru Crita Cabai. Playa Funchi, Boca Slagbaai and Playa Benge are known for its white sandy beaches, its excellent dive sites and fine snorkeling spots. Another highlight in the north of Bonaire is a visit to the old Spanish missionary town Rincon, Bonaire's oldest settlement. The west coast offers pristine coral reefs with plenty of fish and coral life suitable for snorkeling as well as diving.
